CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. It’s the process of maintaining and improving your skills, knowledge, and professional performance throughout your career. Most accounting bodies require CPD to ensure their members stay competent in a fast-changing world.
CPD ensures that accountants stay up to date with changes in standards, legislation, and best practices. It’s also a professional obligation. Most accounting bodies require members to complete CPD each year to retain their membership and uphold public trust in the profession.
The number of CPD hours required varies depending on your professional body. Most require between 20–40 hours per year, with a mix of structured (verifiable) and unstructured (non-verifiable) learning. It’s essential to check with your institute for the exact number and breakdown.
Here’s a brief overview of CPD requirements from some of the major professional accounting bodies:
- ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants): Members are typically required to complete 40 units of CPD annually, comprising 21 units of verifiable CPD and 19 units of non-verifiable CPD. accaglobal.com
- ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales): CPD requirements are categorized based on the nature of work. For example, Category 1 members in practice need to complete 40 hours of CPD annually, with at least 30 hours being verifiable. icaew.com
- CA ANZ (Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand): Members must complete 120 hours of CPD over a three-year period, with a minimum of 20 hours each year. At least 90 hours should be verifiable.
- Chartered Accountants Ireland: Members are required to undertake CPD to maintain professional competence, with specific requirements depending on their role and responsibilities. charteredaccountantsanz.com
- CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy): Members must complete a minimum of 20 hours of learning within a 12-month period, including at least one hour of ethics-related verifiable CPD. cipfa.org
- ICAS (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland): Members are expected to undertake CPD activities relevant to their role, ensuring they maintain professional competence. Specific hour requirements may vary.
- CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants): Members are required to undertake CPD activities that maintain and develop their professional competence. The focus is on the relevance and outcomes of the CPD activities rather than a set number of hours.
Please note that CPD requirements can vary based on factors such as your role, industry sector, and whether you’re in public practice or business. Always refer to your professional body’s official guidelines to ensure compliance.
Verifiable CPD is structured learning that can be backed up with evidence — like a certificate, registration, or participation record. This includes online courses, webinars, workshops, and formal training.
Non-verifiable CPD, on the other hand, includes informal activities like reading articles, watching videos, or self-reflection. While it helps expand your knowledge, it doesn’t produce a formal record.
Most professional bodies require a mix of both, but usually with a minimum number of verifiable hours.

Absolutely. Online CPD is flexible, accessible, and recognised by most professional bodies. All accountingcpd.net courses, webinars, and qualifications are fully online and verifiable.
You can track your CPD using your professional body’s tool, a spreadsheet, or a dedicated CPD tracker.
With AccountingCPD, your CPD hours are automatically logged in your Dashboard. You can download certificates of completion anytime, and, uniquely, you can also log external CPD you’ve done elsewhere, whether it’s online or offline.
This means you can manage all your CPD in one place and generate a single, consolidated certificate for your entire year, making compliance and reporting simple.
CPD is any activity that helps you develop professionally – whether it’s a technical update, leadership training, ethics workshop, or industry-specific learning. The key is that it’s relevant to your role and contributes to your professional competence.
Requirements can vary between professional bodies, so it’s always best to check what your specific institute accepts.
That said, all accountingcpd.net resources are designed to meet the criteria for verifiable CPD and are accepted by most major bodies, including ACCA, ICAEW, CIMA, and more.
Start by identifying the skills you or your team need to develop, whether that’s keeping up with technical standards, improving soft skills, or preparing for a new role.
If you’re planning your own CPD, programmes like the Accountants’ Update Programme make it easy. You’ll get a full year of structured, verifiable content, released monthly, so you stay up to date without hassle.
If you’re managing a team, AccountingCPD offers Team Licences, complete with progress tracking and team management and reporting tools. It’s the smart way to develop skills across a practice or department.
